Chair- Donna Malloy
Deepak Sharma, Cindy Berry,

Research your models below and make a brief statement about how they will align with the guidelines needed for Strategic Priority 4: A Statewide Model of Technology-Enabled Professional Development.

WCS will utilize and align with the following key initiatives/plans to reach for the vision and complete the strategic priorities of our plan...

ACRE, Common Core-Deepak
Career and College Ready, Set, Go!, ESS-Donna

Career and College Ready, Set, Go! Contains four main pillars or focal points.
Under Focus One, Great Teachers and Principals, the creation of a statewide professional development system will help to increase principal and teacher effectiveness. And for teachers in low performing schools with three years or less of experience, a new support program will provide opportunities for professional growth. These will not be offered in isolation, but embedded in their classrooms through team teaching, coaching, demonstration lessons, and the creation of a professional net work.
  • Locally, we will provide staff development to assist all teachers in these areas. Topics offered will include: Project/Problem Based Learning, Data Analysis, and PLC’s.
  • Technology Facilitators and Media Specialists will have monthly collaboration meetings to discuss best practices, needs for professional development, and collaboration ideas.
  • Webinars, video professional development, and conferencing will be offered through the use of the six Tandberg sites county wide.
Focus Two, Standards and Assessments, will require a need for continual training pertaining to blending the new standards in instruction and the revision of assessments that capitalize on the essential and common core standards.
  • Teachers will be highlighted featuring best practices in these areas.
  • Staff development for PLC’s and Project Based learning will become an integral component of this focus.
The third focus, School Turnaround, suggests Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics themed high schools, redesigned schools, and district-level magnet schools and customized approaches based on local needs.
  • We will continue to expand our academies and Early College. This will result in the creation of staff development opportunities for high school staff based on individual sites.
The final focus, Data Systems, focuses on technology to enhance reform in all areas, the introduction of new products through the NC Education Cloud and a push for next generation technology infrastructure.
  • All of these areas will require in-depth training and staff development throughout the district when the Cloud is finalized and our infrastructure changes as it is updated.
  • Administrators will continue to receive training in EVASS for data analysis and diagnostic reports.

Race to the Top Local and State Scopes of Work-Donna

Race to the Top
  • At the local level, Funds from RTT are providing training district wide to all teachers and administrators to ease the transition and promote success when the new standards are implemented.
Teachers will learn to analyze and focus more on student data and how to use technology to enhance work in the classroom.
  • Collaborative planning will be revisited and training will be offered to ensure that teachers understand how to analyze student data, integrate across the curriculum and exchange best practices so they are not teaching in isolation, but truly creating collaborative networks to improve student outcomes.
  • With the 1-1 iPAD initiatives at Hearn and Vick, training will be offered to assist in device integration by the assigned technology facilitator and outside resources.
  • District wide training will also be provided as new digital resources are added to Strategic Priority 3.
  • The North Carolina Education Cloud will offer a platform designed to deliver technology services to our staff. Training will be provided by the local LEA as spelled out in the RTT initiative once the Cloud resources are finalized.
  • RTT will also implement an Instructional Improvement System (IIS), which will offer access to a variety of information such as online professional development, student data, CEU records. We will offer training on these areas as they are made available.

IMPACT & ASSL-Cindy
While the IMPACT Model has proven effective, it will need to be updated and changed. The model includes a full time Media Specialist and a full time Technology Facilitator. While both positions play a critical role in preparing teachers and students for the 21st century, budget crisis is having an impact on these positions. In an effort to protect classroom teachers, these positions may be cut. Wilson County Schools will continue to embrace the IMPACT model by providing staff development needed for effective classroom instruction.
The IMPACT model and ASSL standards will foster a collaborative environment which will include a vast array of technology to be used. Both models also support the integration of technology instead of teacher technology skills in isolation.
The media coordinator and technology facilitator will offer professional development on best practices in using technology and media resources to support student achievement." This bold statement will drive the professional development within the schools to increase the effective use of technology.

Other LEA initiates/plans
  1. Implement a plan for embedded technology-enabled professional development for teachers and administrator-Ensure every teacher in NC has a thorough understanding of the standards and can implement them to improve student outcomes.

Professional educators will be supported individually and in teams by technology that connects them to data, content, resources, expertise, and learning experiences that can empower and inspire them to provide more effective teaching for all learners.
  3. Prepare students for online assessment delivery. WCS will support students as they learn to use 21st century skills in the classroom and begin to use online assessment tools such as Class Scape. Ample training will be provided to professional educators so that students get the needed support to make this transition smooth.
